RECREATION

Mother Neff State Park lies along the Leon River and is one of the first state parks in Texas. The original six acres of the park were donated in 1921. The park features a lodge, 3.5 miles of trails, full camper hookups, cement pads and more. Coryell County Museum is a vital part of the community and houses the largest collection of spurs in the world featuring approximately 10,000 pairs. The Last Drive in Picture Show, Gatesville Country Music Show, Gatesville Country Club, the walking trail and numerous parks provide additional unique leisure opportunities.

HISTORY

Gatesville, TX was established around the time Coryell County was organized in 1854. The town’s name originated from nearby Fort Gates. The arrival of a large number of settlers in the late 1800s led to incorporation in 1870. Within the decade, Gatesville had become an important supply station. Rail service opened the area to neighboring markets and made Gatesville the county’s major shipping and supply center.
